A PERSONAL ACCOUNT FROM A GREEN SUPPORTER IN AMERICA

This is a story from a Green Supporter who lives in San Jose, San Francisco, CA.

Last Wednesday (30 December 2009) John attended a Green Rally in support of the Iranian Green Movement.

The Freedom for Iran blog would like to give special thanks to this great supporter.

***************************

I had to walk there and back, and it was NOT a short walk from Sunnyvale to Santana Row in San Jose. I made it though …

I wanted to share with you all some impressions, especially as regards comparisons with the November 4 rally by the same group in the same spot.

We definitely had more people this time. I tried to count but couldn't...we're not talking mega rally, but definitely over 125 people….

That last point doesn't matter though because the main comparison I want to make is between the responses from passersby (honking and shouting and giving signs of support)....

The response from Americans of all walks of life, social groups, ethnicities etc was very encouraging on November 4. AND this time is was incomparably more so. Not just because of how many more people turned out, but because of how enthusiastically, passionately, and adamantly they did it! …

This showed to me that within the last two weeks the Iranian people's bravery and the regime's utter depravity have finally registered pretty damn deeply with the American people, media coverage or not.

We also tried to march though Santa Row, a very posh upscale pedestrian outdoor shopping mall, but security stopped us after the first block or so, and we had to exit and go back to where we were. (They also filmed us. Give me a break! Our brothers and sisters brave Basijis cameramen and we're supposed to say OH EEK to a couple of mall cops?! PLEASE!!)

We were getting shouts and honks of support the whole way though, even when I honestly couldn't figure out how the passers-by could see the banners and signs from where they started honking.

I am only just now realizing that in many instances, I think these people actually circled around after seeing our signs the first time just so they could drive by and do that. Come to think of it, in every such case, the driver was honking while passengers were leaning of out the windows and screaming (I mean SCREAMING) their support while flashing V signs or some other sign of support.

The chants were good (my vocal chords beg to differ...I'm just glad my crummy throat didn't give out--my stage voice from all those high school plays came through! I was one of the loudest on my end of the group, which snaked around a curb), we did a two minute silence in memory of all those killed. [NB: On Ashura]

Before and after that, they sang an old hymn. I can't remember if it's the one written back in the 1940s, because they sang two, and one of them I JUST HAVE to learn the name, not only because of tonight, but because for the last month it's been popping into my head and haunting me at the most random time, when I'm not even thinking about our common cause. And I'm not complaining, I welcome it when it pops unexpectedly into my head. I had to smile when they started singing it. I just wish there was a way I could confirm which one it is? I can only hum it, which doesn't exactly help in this forum. [NB: Subsequently established that the song was Yare Dabestani http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4LY-HB]

THE AFTERMATH OF ASHURA - TUESDAY 29 DECEMBER 2009

I am anonymous - because that's safer for me.

Today is Tuesday 30 December. My city of Tehran remains tense. It erupted in chaos and flames on Sunday - Ashura and the 7th day of mourning for Grand Ayatollah Montazeri. This has continued to a large extent ever since.

This blog explains, from my perspective, what's happening in Tehran today.

All times given are Iran. GMT is minus 3.5 hours.

*******************************************

11:30

  • The Coup d'etat Government continues to tell lies about the events that have unfolded over the past few days.
  • State TV and radio stations are propagandizing - trying to persuade the people to come out onto the streets tomorrow and rally AGAINST 'what happened on Ashura'!!
  • How audacious - they open fire and murder people - then try their propaganda to try to blame "some" rioters who 'have insulted Ashura and Imam Hossein'!!
  • Let's see how many people they can bring to the streets!
  • All the while we have TV, radio stations, internet and loudspeakers around the University of Tehran!

13:30

  • For the past two hours helicopters have been flying over the city!
  • This is unusual!
  • I guess they are trying to show their power before the day of their State Rally!
14:20
  • Protestors are now gathering at Resalat Square
  • The people are chanting!
14:50

  • The helicopters, which had been flying since noon, have now gone.
  • People at Resalat Square are chanting Alloho-Akbar.
  • Security forces will not allow cars to stop at Resalat - not at all.
  • An eyewitness has just told me this from Elm-o Sanat University in the eastern region of Tehran.
15:40
  • Students of Elm-o Sanat university have some clashes with security forces.
  • They have now gathered in front of the Head of the University's Office.

IRANIAN REGIME STEALS BILLIONS - HIDES IT IN OVERSEAS BANKS!!!

I am anonymous - because that's safer for me.

UPDATE : MONDAY 11 JANUARY 2010

Further information from a trusted source :
Sepah is transferring its business from the United Arab Emirates to Malaysia and Macao to facilitate its trade links with China. Sepah commanders are reported to have moved more than 3.2 billion dollars to Macao using a former sepah officer called Haj Safdar.

**************************************

Information has been passed to me by a supporter of the "greens". The source is a secure one who, trust me, has access to this information. The source works within the international banking industry in the Middle East. For obvious reasons he, like myself, must remain anonymous!

This shows many billions worth of American dollars, British pounds and Euros in bank accounts held by more than 60 leaders of the Coup d'etat Iranian Government. These accounts, as you will see below, are strewn throughout the World - from South Africa to Dubai; Turkey to Switzerland, Germany to Beruit, and Barclays Bank in the United Kingdom to the Alnakhl Corporation!

This money belongs to Iran! It belongs to the people of Iran. It has been stolen by the people listed below!!!

As you can see, we have found more than :

  • ONE BILLION US DOLLARS
  • 4 BILLION EUROS
  • 1 BILLION POUNDS STERLING

Will Iranians ever get this money back? Will international banking laws allow us to bring this money home to Iran once we have achieved freedom and democracy for our Country? I do not know. But I hope we can - and rest assured we will do our very best to ensure that this happens and that those who have stolen it are brought to justice!

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For... See More the traitor appears not traitor, he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their garments, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared. --- Cicero, 42 B.C.

THE AFTERMATH OF ASHURA - WHAT NEXT?!

I am anonymous - because that's safer for me!

Yesterday was Ashura, one of the holiest days in Islam. It was also the 7th day following the death of Ayatollah Montazeri, rest in peace.

Protesters flooded the streets of my city, and many cities across Iran. At least NINE people were murdered by agents of the Regime for protesting - as we have been doing since the Coup d'etat election in June 2009.

Many arrests were made - a conservative estimate is 400 but, do you know, I suspect many more have been arrested!!

But, my friends, please don't think I'm disheartened because I'M NOT!!

The concept of FREEDOM is something everyone can celebrate and I think it's now close!

Times given are Iran - GMT is minus 3.5 hours

********************************************

Protests Tonight

20:25

  • Right now there are some clashes on Haft-tir and Valiasr Sq.
  • It all started at about 18:30
  • There nothing happening until 18:00!
  • I can’t even call to landlines there to get some news!

Is Khamenei going to flee?

14:30
  • My friend in the States has just told me that the news about the Regime "big-wigs" fleeing to Russia is "not accurate"!
07:00

  • I just heard the news on about the Regime dictators being at the airport too, however we can't say it's 100 % true.
  • However, there is a very important point to the news : the people are getting very close to their aim, and the dictators have now realized how close they are to their downfall!
  • I heard from a friend there is news circulating that the airport getting ready to transport the authorities, if need be.
  • People were calling the radio and saying that the front doors of the airport were shut. 5 airplanes were ready to take off at any second and there were fighter jets behind them, ready take off with them, for protection. There was talk about Khamanei - saying that he had been transported to a military base for protection. They were also saying that his son was transported to Kish, so that if need be, he can fly out from there.
  • A friend in America told me that many called the radio in the States and said the same thing. One of them was saying that his friend works at the airport and he was swearing up and down, that it was his friend who gave him this news. He was saying: "I swear to God, this news is 99.99% accurate....."
  • This was at around 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time, or about 4:00 or 4:30 p.m. Iran time.

The numbers killed and arrested

07:00
  • I heard 8 and also 10 people were killed. I am sure the number are more than just 10! Consider that this number is only for Tehran.
  • Qom, Tabriz and Isfahan and Najaf Abad are other cities where clashes have also taken place between the people and the Regime!

A General Strike?

07:00
  • There is going to be a General Strike. So far I can only confirm this for students.
  • I am going to Enghelab, where the University of Tehran is.
  • There I can verify the news on a General Strike and I hope I can access the internet from there!

Martial Law?

07:00
  • I was told very late last night that martial law was just declared in Najaf Abad - I've since heard it has been declared in other cities around Iran.
  • I think martial law is going be declared in other cities too, and this is the very probable step.
  • BUT I think - WOW!!! we're already the winner - the declaration of martial law is a sure sign that the Regime has lost control of Iran!

DOWN WITH RELIGIOUS LEADERSHIP - CONTRADICTION OR VISION???

I'm anonymous - because that's safer for me.

Ayatollah Montazeri died last Sunday. I wrote this piece in Farsi and it has been translated into English by a friend - thanks to that friend for his kindness.

********************

Why do I see a paradox between the chants we hear and the way people act? Why do they chant "Down with the Islamic Republic", while at the same time they gather in such large numbers on the day of the funeral for a clergyman? The man who was frowned upon by this Regime. The death and funeral of whom made news headlines all over the world?

The slogan of "Down with the Principle of Supreme Religious Leadership" on the day of the funeral of the founder of the principle of "Supreme Religious Leadership" is this a contradiction or a vision?

The clergyman who died was the founder of the "Supreme Religious Leadership" principle, whose views coincided with a nod towards this principle. He was the same person who are "heir-apparent" to the then Supreme Leader, mass executions took place - and he did not object and never condemned them.

A revolution means change and people's feelings have definitely changed. At times it seems like people make decisions and act based on their emotions, including during the funeral of Ayatollah Montazeri!

But let's open up this discussion and look deeper inside the society. There are several groups of people:

  1. People who are tired of Ahmadinejad's government and don't want him as the president. They want another person like Khatami to be the president (when discussing things with them you realize that they don't really want a system change). All they want is for things to get better, the corruptions reduced and eliminated, Islam to be respected and, at the very least, for people to have freedom of choice when it comes to religion. Compared with seven months ago, I believe this group has been greatly reduced in size. Usually they are not young and are poorly educated. They are usually above 35-40 years old. In other words, this group of people are still stuck in the beginning of the Revolution. They are usually "simple-minded" people whose voices are never heard. They get the short-end of the stick from both sides. The regime does not consider them insiders but they are not complete outsiders either. They are the people who used to come to the street to support the Revolution Day and the Palestine Day and the regime used to call them the "Ever Present People". In the last six months their numbers have dwindled greatly. They constitute about 6% of the society.
  2. The second group of people do not think like the first group I mentioned. In fact they are in disagreement. They think that this system has passed it's trial period and it's now time for it to go. Primarily because it has not even been able to keep it's most loyal supporters! This is how they think: This system is a despotic and dictatorial system and all dictatorships are doomed. They believe in a democratic and secular system and think that the Parliament should consist of true representatives of the people. They are not against Islam but they despise religious governments. This group comprises young university students. Many of them think that Mousavi was only a choice between bad and worse but they do not think about the election anymore. Many people outside the universities are also in the same camp and they think that this group of people are the true winners of the current struggle. They think that this group will eventually down this regime and will install a non-religious government in it's place. These people usually live in mid-sized and large cities and attend all demonstrations. They constitute the middle-class of society (about 77%).
  3. There is yet another group who believe that until people reach political maturity and know how to distinguish good from bad, there is no hope of improvement to the current situation. This group of people usually do not nothing to improve the situation. They hardly follow the news, the slogans, the dates of demonstrations and the direction of the movement. They do not believe in the role of religion and they do not think that Islam is in contrast with democracy. They say: "if people are aware, they can have a democratic system that coexists with a religious system". They are usually elitists and come from a well-to-do classes of the society. The big bourgeois! (5% of society).
  4. A fourth group is the one that vehemently believes in the current system, even though they live in poor cultural and economic situations. They do not think much and are very passive in accepting words from above. The seem very dogmatic and when one talks to them regarding economics and financial events, they seem to be the most discontented group. But, at the same time, when it comes to elections or government-sanctioned demonstrations, they are always first in line. (I personally feel sorry for them because they are the most impoverished people in the society.) They are adamant that this regime is an ideal masonic regime founded on the principles of the 12th Imam. They are the true representatives of brain-washed people and constitute about 5% of the society.
  5. There is a small group of people who usually live in small cities and villages. They usually belong to lower-classes of society and are culturally and financially impoverished. They fiercely oppose this regime (and they probably also opposed the Shah's regime in 1979). They think that this system has not been a just one and has brought about poverty. They oppose all symbols of religion - including the Mullahs. But this opposition is due to their poor economic conditions rather than any wisdom. In a way, they are considered supporters of the Green Movement but are too afraid to participate in the demonstrations or to start anything in their own provinces. Their need is to feed their families and they cannot afford, in either sense of the word, to involve themselves in the demonstrations or the revolutionary movement. They are usually people who despise fashionable boys and girls. When they see young girls who do not believe in veils and Hijab, they say things like: "Only the Basij knows how to handle these people." They constitute about 7% of the society.

Well, I think people who have participated in the demonstrations in the past six months and still continue to do so belong to the second group of people. They are the ones who have shown their opposition using any means possible. They are the first people who after the election came out and announced to the world: "where is my vote?!". They are the same people who after Khamenei's speech on that famous Saturday came out to the streets and showed how determined they were - and still are today! And on the Black Monday they came out in millions to show their resolve. On Palestine day they chanted "No to Gaza, No to Lebanon...I die only for Iran". On November 4th (13 Aban) they showed their direct opposition by chanting "Death to Khamenei". On December 7th (16 Azar) they were beaten more than any other group and still continued to protest. And they are the same people who showed up again on Montazeri's funeral.

But we need to get a birds-eye view in order to see more clearly:

  • In the past six months the protesters have tried to make this regime pay by showing their opposition. Their silent protests and the subsequent killing of innocent people by the regime was the beginning of the end for the regime's officials. By firing on innocent people, whatever was left of the regime's dignity was gone - and it added to their terrible reputation. When people chanted: "Khatami, Mousavi, Karroubi, Saneii, Montazeri..." in effect people were creating enemies for the regime and they were making it harder for the regime to arrest or harm them. Thus making the Green side stronger. By naming the clergy and chanting slogans in their favor, people were pulling them to their side and this worked out perfectly. When they were chanting "No to East, No to West...Only an Iranian Republic", they were pulling people from the third group to their side. And this worked out perfectly too. Therefore, gathering under the cover of "Ayatollah Montazeri's Funeral" does not mean that everyone believes in his religious thoughts.

There are two messages here:

  1. People know the value of those who are with them.
  2. This was a chance to show who is opposing the current regime and, by supporting Montazeri, they made Khamenei the common enemy.

There are many people who belong to this group who think of former president Khatami was guilty of treason. Not because Khatami did commit treason against Islam but because he was able to make many changes during his presidency but chose not to do anything. But he is still known as a leader of the so-called reformists. But his role and influence has been greatly reduced.

I personally insist on saying that I have never gone out to demonstrate because Mousavi, Karroubi or Khatami said so. I went because I had to go to get rid of this despotic system. These "nominal leaders" are only there as symbolic figures of this struggle. And I assure my friends outside the country that in the future system of government in Iran, there will be no room for these people or their ways of religious and Islamic thinking. The people of Iran "owed" this historical opportunity to the clergy. But we have been paying this back in ten-fold over the past 30-years! And all these killings, crimes, rapes, tortures and arrests are the pain that comes about because Iran is giving birth to a democracy.

Your comments are very valuable to me so please do not deprive me of them.

With the hope of a free Iran.

The Passing of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and What His Death Will Bring!!

I am anonymous - because that's safer for me.

Today is Sunday, 20 December. 87 year-old Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri died early this morning, at home, in the holy city of Qom, Iran. According to his grandson, Nasser Montazeri, he died in his sleep. This news has huge implications for Iran and the people's fight for freedom and democracy.

Background

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri had been very vocal in his condemnation of the Regime's appalling human rights abuses - particularly since the sham election of June 2009. One of his speeches in 1997 - broadcast again only last October - denounced Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying he was not worthy to be a majra (a senior cleric worthy of emulation). This declaration resulted in his house arrest. He has soundly condemned the Regime for its actions since the June 2009 election and, since doing this, has received nothing but disrespect - and virtual house-arrest - over the past few months.

Today, the Regime has reacted predictably to the news of his death. Although thousands of people were on the streets, outside his home in Qom, and in Tehran and other cities, immediately the news broke, Iranian State TV waited for hours before making a formal announcement - even dropping his title of Grand Ayatollah!! Criticism of the cleric soon followed - somewhat predictably - but nothing the Regime can say or do can stop the people from gathering to pay their respects to this man, one of the founders of the Islamic Republic back in 1979.

By nightfall on Sunday evening - in Qom, Tehran and other cities in Iran, the Regime's forces were working hard to stop mourners gathering to mourn for Grand Ayatollah Montazeri and also protest at the injustices of the Coup d'etat Government! There were reports of arrests and worse. Riot police - basijis and plain-clothed police - were reportedly stopping buses travelling to the city of Qom, using tear gas to disperse crowds in Tehran, Qom and other cities.

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri's funeral is scheduled to take place in Qom at 9am local time on Monday 21 December.

This post will deal with what I am seeing and hearing today and over the coming days.

All times given will be GMT. Iran times are +3.5 hours.

  • There had been group mourning for Moharam in the mosque near where I live in Tehran. People had been gathering there to mourn each night since the beginning of Moharam. But no-one was there in the tent and the mosque for the past three days! They had all gone to the streets - to the the places where protests and demonstrations were taking place. This was also happening at three other mourning groups closeby to where I live.
  • We are on standby tonight. Mobiles are blocked and are not working.
  • Email services are blocked and the blockages are like I experienced on 16 Azar 16 and 13 Aban!
  • All this is for the the death of Ayatollah Montazeri! I can hear roof chanting in some areas of Tehran, and have heard reports about a gathering in Mirdamad Blvd.
  • I can’t personally confirm this. I was there at Mirdamad Blvd 4 hours ago. Where I was there was no gathering at that time but, by now, a protest may well be happening.
20:30

Basijis and plain clothed security forces are on stand-by for tomorrow.

  • Reports say hundreds of thousands of people gathered to mourn for Ayatollah Montazeri but this has turned into a demonstration against the regime.
  • Basijis and police forces attacked the people many times, and fired tear gas.
  • Local Qom police protected peaceful demonstrators from basiji and security forces who attacked them, destroying banners carrying Ayatollah Montazeri's image.
1348
  • Protests have been taking place throughout Iran all day today.
  • An announcement has just been made that people will gather in Tehran tonight, between 8 and 10 pm local time to protest - Vanak Sq, Vali Asr, 7 Tir, Mohseni, Azadi, Enghelab.

AHMADINEJAD - THE FOOL!!!

This is the latest AN joke circulating in Shiraz ...

********************

On his recent visit to Washington Ahmadinejad was quite impressed with how modern the Country was and how disciplined services seemed to run. [He was impressed but didn't want to show it : down with America! after all]

In a private meeting he asked American President Barak Obama "How come your Country is so modern and so great?"

Obama replied that this was because, in America, planning was done and, when before someone was allowed to stand for office, checks were made on their IQ. He said he could best illustrate this with an example.

So he called Hillary Clinton in to show how intelligent his Cabinet members were.

Obama : "Mrs Clinton .. I want to ask you a question and you have 30 minutes to answer it"

Who is the one who is your parents child but is not your brother or sister?

Ahmadinejad looked confused.

Hillary thought for a while and then said : That would be myself.

Ahmadinejad was VERY impressed, clapping and crying bravo!!

Ahmadinejad travels back to Iran urgently, desperate to check his own Ministers' IQ.

He called for Mottaki on his arrival and said :

"You are a fool - why did I ask you to be Foreign Minister?!". I'm going to ask you a question and you have 3 days to answer it - or I will fire you immediately" :

Who is the one who is your parents child but is not your brother or sister?

Motaki thinks and thinks for a whole day and is unable to come up with an answer. He becomes desperate so thinks to himself :

"I'd better go and ask Saeed Hajarian (mastermind of the reformist movement) as he's a clever guy!".

So he goes to the prison, finds Hajarian and says "Hey you! You are an America-lover - now tell me :

Who is the one who is your parents child but is not your brother or sister?

Hajarian replies immediately : "Why that would be me".

A delighted Mottaki runs from the prison and back to AN shouting "At last - I have found the Answer!!!" - it's Saeed Hajarian!!!"

Ahmadinejad is furious with him and shouts :

"NOOOOOO you FOOOOL!!! You are an Idiot!!!"

The answer's not Saeed Hajarian
It's Hillary Clinton
Can't you see that!!!???!!!

16 AZAR - STUDENTS DAY 16 آذر روز دانشجو

From 0700 -1500 in Tehran - this is my story.

SAADI ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND HUMAN EMOTIONS

Iranian people are among the most poetic, spiritual and well-educated in the World. They care about human rights and always have done.

One of Persia's most famous poets lived in medieval times. His name was
Abū Muṣliḥ bin Abdallāh Shīrāzī (1184 – 1283/1291?), better known by his pen-name as Saʿdīi (
Persian: سعدی).

Saadi is recognised today - not only for the quality of his writings, but also for the depth of his social commentaries on human rights issues.
In the run up to 16 azar, this poem is dedicated to Neda's memory and to everyone her name has come to represent.

Human beings are members of a whole.
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you have no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain.
Sa'adi

16 AZAR - PUBLISHED INFORMATION

16 azar (7 December) is Students Day in Tehran.

This year Students will be joined by others on the streets of the capital Tehran, and in towns and cities throughout the Country as thousands upon thousands will once more risk their lives to protest for their rights to freedom and democracy. 16 azar 2009 will be a nationwide uprising in Iran as people protest against the dictatorship of Khamenei and his Islamic Regime.

I like this description, which comes from Designer, Kahve Ahangar Adel (which I found on Freedom Messenger's Facebook page) http://www.facebook.com/pages/Freedom-Messenger-Ghasedane-AZADI/108514667270?ref=ts :

December 7th (16th of Azar in Persian calendar) is a pivotal day in Iranian modern history, especially this year. Dissent and uprising traditionally started with students in Universities and colleges. University of Tehran has always been a hot bed of activity rooting back to 1953 when Shah was forcefully brought back and 3 students were shot and killed right before Nixon paid a visit to Iran. In 1978 Shah ordered slaughtering students at point blank, that time without success. He was toppled, proving that tyrants WILL fall. In 1999, the current Islamic regime did the same...never learning from history. They kept their power, for the time being. In June of 2009, election was stolen and more people were slaughtered. they kept the power....for the time being. In memoriam of the innocent blood that was spilt by these tyrants (old and new) Demonstrations are scheduled. The deep rooted bloody history is never forgotten, it's in our hearts-- our hearts are green and it fuels the freedom movement. I support freedom of thought, expression and life anywhere...especially now, in Iran. The Pure-hearted shall prevail. Waves in history repeat themselves.....

This blog aims to bring together published information for 16 azar (7 December) and will give sources wherever possible.
